how to use

your pobroll®

step-by-step guide

In this interactive step-by-step guide, the pobroll® bed bathing process has been broken down into smaller sections. Each one demonstrates a different stage of the process, guiding you through how to use the pobroll®.

For the purpose of this guide, we shall refer to you (the person or persons doing the washing) as the CARER and your loved one, service user, friend, or client as the PERSON using the pobroll®. We understand that this sounds a little impersonal, but it is useful for making the instructions as clear as possible.

If it is your first time using the pobroll®, it may be beneficial for you to scroll through each section in full before you begin your bed-bathing adventure. Just to get yourself used to the process.

For the purpose of these instructions, the washing side will be on the left-hand side of the bed. The pobroll®, however, can be used on either side of the bed. For the pobroll® to be properly utilised, ensure that the two open edges are facing the side of the bed that you will be washing on.

washing

hints and tips

As you get used to your pobroll®, you will find your own way of washing that is comfortable for both you and the person you are caring for. In the meantime, here are a few hints and tips to get you on your way.

Check that the room is warm and that there are no draughts. Make sure the door is shut and the blinds or curtains are closed to ensure the person's privacy.

Try to only reveal the part of the body you are washing and then cover it again before uncovering the next area. This way, you will keep the warmth in, and the person will not feel too exposed.

Allow for a pause if desired before moving to the next area.

You may wish to periodically change the water, which may have become cold.

The person's intimate area should be washed after the rest of the body has been cleaned.

As you wash and dry, check the person's body for redness, sores, and irritations.

It is important to offer the person the opportunity to participate in their own care, which helps to maintain their independence, self-esteem, and dignity.

Where the person is unsettled or doesn’t understand what is happening, it may help to have a second carer sitting next to them, offering reassurance and talking to them throughout the washing process.

If the person has stiff hips and tends to keep their legs clamped together, try placing a pillow between their knees when they are lying on their back.

As they roll onto their side, their knees will be held slightly apart, allowing better access for washing the intimate areas.
